“His Grace has many cares: he entrusts some small data matters to us, that we might lighten the load.” The small data council is a body which advises the CDO of the Seven Kingdoms and institutes data policy at his command. It is the inner (thus “small”) council of the CDO, essentially forming the “government cabinet” of the Seven Kingdoms. Members are appointed to their position by the CDO; theoretically they can be dismissed at will by the CDO, however in practice this might lead to undesirable political fallout.
Who owns geography reference data at Facebook or master data at LinkedIn? The first questions that needs an answer when introducing data governance are typically: what data do we have, where is it and who owns it in terms of risk and compliance as well as cost/value. A data owner is typically one person that is accountable to put everything in place to have acceptable data in terms of definition, quality and protection. In this blog I’ll give two real live use case examples.
The data governance program is set on a world called Westeros where projects can last for years at a time. The main setting is the area of the Brussels head office, which was home to seven feuding departments until they were united by the Targaryen family (using dragons) some decades ago. The dragons died out and the Targaryan Mad Chief Data Officer (CDO) was unseated in an infighting led by Lords Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark, 3 years before the program launches.
A few days back at a birthday party, I had a very interesting conversation on the Germanwings crash with a Cargo pilot from Lufthansa. We talked about the door lock set-up that was installed after 9/11 and the new “cockpit rule” that quite some airlines were setting in place. As everybody probably knows by now, the new cockpit rule, makes it mandatory for 2 people of airplane staff to be present within the cockpit at all times.
